Battlefield Acupuncture
Battlefield Acupuncture for Chronic Pain, Severe Acute Pain & Surgical Support
At Soma Health Center, we offer Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) as a quick, effective complementary option for managing both ongoing chronic pain and intense acute pain episodes — including support before and after surgery. Originally developed for rapid relief in battlefield and emergency settings, this specialized ear (auricular) technique is now widely used in clinics and hospitals to help reduce pain intensity, ease discomfort, and support recovery without adding to medication burden.
BFA involves placing up to five tiny, sterile needles (or press tacks) at specific points in the outer ear. The entire protocol takes just minutes, requires no downtime, and can deliver noticeable relief almost immediately for many patients.
How Battlefield Acupuncture Helps with Different Types of Pain
Patients often turn to BFA because it can provide fast, non-drug support across a range of pain experiences:
01
Chronic Pain
Including back, joint, neuropathic, or musculoskeletal pain that persists for months or years. Many report meaningful reductions in daily pain levels and improved function over time.
02
Severe acute pain
Such as flare-ups, injuries, or sudden episodes in emergency or clinic settings, where quick calming of the nervous system can make a big difference.
03
Pre- and post-operative pain
Helping to lower pre-surgery anxiety and post-surgery discomfort, often reducing the need for opioids in the critical first 24–48 hours after procedures like joint replacements or general surgery.
In a large VA study of veterans with chronic pain, Battlefield Acupuncture led to immediate pain reduction in 82% of treatments, with benefits seen in both group and individual sessions. Read the full study on chronic pain relief with Battlefield Acupuncture here.
For surgical contexts, research on veterans undergoing operations showed that BFA as an adjunct therapy helped lower post-operative pain scores and opioid requirements in the recovery period. See the perioperative Battlefield Acupuncture study here.
In emergency settings, BFA has also been studied for acute low back pain, showing feasibility and rapid effects when standard care alone isn’t enough.
What to Expect
The treatment is simple, comfortable, and easy to fit into busy schedules:
- We review your pain history, current medications, and any upcoming procedures.
- The session lasts only a few minutes with minimal sensation — most people feel little more than a brief pinch.
- Needles are usually removed right after or left briefly; some protocols use tiny press tacks that fall out naturally within days.
- Treatments can be done the day before surgery, in the days following, or as needed for chronic or acute flares.
Patients frequently describe feeling calmer and more comfortable shortly after, with better sleep, easier movement, and less reliance on stronger pain medications.
A Complementary Tool for Pain Management
Battlefield Acupuncture works best alongside your primary medical care — whether that’s physical therapy, medications prescribed by your doctor, or surgical follow-up. It does not replace conventional pain management but can enhance comfort and recovery as part of a multimodal plan.
Important Disclaimer
Battlefield Acupuncture is a complementary therapy only. It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, surgery, pain medications, or prescribed treatments, and does not cure underlying pain conditions. Results vary widely by individual. Always consult your physician or surgeon before starting, especially around any operation or if you have severe acute pain (herbs or other adjuncts may interact with medications if used).
